Pochodzenie tej katedry pozostaje bardzo niejasne. Mówi się o IV i V wieku. Wiadomo, że pierwszy kościół został zbudowany na starym wale galijsko-rzymskim i zajmował miejsce starożytnej świątyni. A potwierdza to odkrycie w prezbiterium katedry w 1776 r. wotywnego posągu Merkurego, ołtarza poświęconego bogu Marsowi za absydą w 1850 r. oraz przypuszczalnych wizerunków Marka Aureliusza znalezionych w dekanacie w 1908 r. Obecną katedrę zbudowano w latach 1090-1522.
