Cerkiew znajduje się na wzgórzu w części zamku miejskiego (w dzielnicy Kalaja) w Berat. Wraz z innymi zabytkami w tym mieście — domami, cerkwiami, meczetami i fortyfikacjami — tworzy historyczny krajobraz wpisany na listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO jako Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastër. Cerkiew powstała prawdopodobnie w XIII lub XIV wieku — co potwierdza inskrypcja z imieniem Andronikos Angelos Palaiologos, gubernatora prowincji Berat w latach 1302-1326. Oznacza to, że pochodzi z okresu średniowiecza bizantyjsko-prawosławnego. Architektura cerkwi to efekt łączenia elementów typowych dla Kościoła wschodniego (bizantyjskiego) z pewnymi wpływami zachodnimi z tamtego okresu. Wnętrze ozdobione jest malowidłami / freskami — choć skąpo zachowanymi.
