Fort Peniche, zbudowany w XVI-XVII wieku w celu obrony wybrzeża w połączeniu z fortem na plaży Consolação i fortem na wyspie Berlengas. Odgrywał ważną rolę w różnych momentach historii Portugalii, ale jego najnowszym wkładem była rola więzienia politycznego podczas Estado Novo, w którym przetrzymywano niektóre z najważniejszych osobistości publicznych ruchu oporu wobec reżimu.
