Mury obronne Opola wybudowano na przełomie XII i XIII stulecia. W kolejnych wiekach mur został wzmocniony basztami i barbakanem. Najlepiej zachowane fragmenty ceglanych murów obronnych podziwiać można jedynie na terenie klasztoru sióstr Notre Dame z basztą Wilczą i zrekonstruowane częściowo mury przy katedrze z Basztą Rybacką.
