Jest to pierwszy park ciemnego nieba na Słowacji. Stało się 20. parkiem ciemnego nieba na świecie. W ciągu dnia ludzie, zwierzęta i rośliny potrzebują światła, w nocy potrzebują ciemności. Na Słowacji nie ma już całkowicie naturalnej ciemności nocnej, na którą nie wpłynęłoby sztuczne oświetlenie ludzi. Wynika to z zanieczyszczenia światłem. Jednak wciąż są miejsca, w których wpływ ten jest minimalny. Takim miejscem jest też Park Narodowy Połoniny, który jest najciemniejszym obszarem na Słowacji pod względem zanieczyszczenia światłem.
