Zamek Freudenstein położony jest na Schloßplatz, na obrzeżach centrum miasta Freiberg. Po odkryciu srebra w Christiansdorfie margrabia Otton II z Miśni kazał w 1168 roku zbudować zamek w celu ochrony kopalni srebra. Budowę nowego zamku rozpoczął w 1566 roku mistrz budowlany Hans Irmisch pod kierunkiem Rochusa zu Lynara. Jego ukończenie w stylu renesansowym ukończono w 1577 roku. W latach 2005-2008 został przebudowany w wyniku ogólnoeuropejskiego konkursu pod kierunkiem AFF Architects Berlin/Chemnitz.
