Staw Chełm ma powierzchnię około 27 ha. Ponad połowa powierzchni zajęta jest przez trzcinowiska i szuwary, głównie w zachodniej i południowej części, które miejscami przechodzą w las olchowy. Przy północnym brzegu rosną dwa pomnikowe dęby. Staw jest ostoją ptactwa.
