Lokalne zapisy z 1742 r. wskazują, że konia pierwotnie "wycięto" pod koniec XVII w., prawdopodobnie dla upamiętnienia domniemanej bitwy pod Ethandun, która miała miejsce w obozie Bratton w 878 r. n.e.

Wyryty w kredzie koń pierwotnie wymagał regularnego czyszczenia, aby zachować jego biel. Ostatnie odnotowane czyszczenie miało miejsce w 1853 roku. Pod koniec lat 50. XX wieku konia zakonserwowano, pokrywając go pomalowanym na biało betonem.
