Zbiornik utworzony w 1986 roku poprzez spiętrzenie wód Raby przez zaporę, która ma 30 m wysokości i 617 m długości. Jezioro ma powierzchnię ok. 10,7 km² i pojemność całkowitą 127 mln m3. Poniżej zbiornika funkcjonuje elektrownia wodna o mocy 2,5 MW. Regionalny Zarząd Gospodarki Wodnej w Krakowie zdecydował się 1 czerwca na otwarcie zapory dla ruchu turystycznego. Gmina przygotowała ścieżkę zabezpieczającą, co pozwoliło na wykorzystanie zbiornika dobczyckiego do celów rekreacyjnych.
