Wzniesiono go w 1000 roku, nad brzegiem Nançon, to największa zachowana średniowieczna twierdza w Europie. Na skrzyżowaniu głównych szlaków handlowych Marches de Bretagne, średniowieczna twierdza będzie ewoluowała na przestrzeni wieków w zależności od różnych władców, którzy ją kontrolowali. Po ślubie księżnej Anny Bretanii z królem Francji granica Marchii Bretanii straciła swoje strategiczne znaczenie, pozostawiając twierdzę w rękach różnych namiestników wojskowych, a w XVIII wieku stała się więzieniem. Pomimo tej niestabilności zamek Château de Fougères prezentuje dziś sylwetkę i stan zachowania niemal identyczny z XV wiekiem.
