Symbol bogactwa handlu z odległymi regionami, pierwsza Dzwonnica Bretanii została wzniesiona przez mieszczan miejskich w 1397 roku. Jej architektura inspirowana jest wzorami flamandzkimi, które sukiennicy z Fougères odkryli podczas swoich podróży po Flandrii. Na dzwonie wyryty jest napis: „W 1397 roku miasta Fougères nadały mi imię Roland Chapelle”.
